Connor grew up listening to soul music under the influence of her grandfather who was born in New Orleans. She also sang gospel music in a church choir at an early age and started appearing in school musicals. Her first big break came at 17 when she was picked from her school to sing at a Michael Jackson concert in Germany. Inspired, she quit school in 11th grade and started sending off demo tapes to record labels and producers under the name "Sarah Grey".
